What is Bandhan Bank's Contactless Debit Card?

A contactless card is a fast and convenient way to pay for everyday purchases. It is a secure, contactless chip technology designed to help customers to spend less time at the cash register. It helps customers to make contactless payments, seamlessly. Bandhan Bank's contactless Debit Card is a CHIP-enabled and radio frequency antenna embedded Debit Card. This card can be used at all the NFC-enabled contactless terminals all over the world.

Note: As directed by RBI, w.e.f. March 16, 2020, at the time of issuance or re-issuance, contactless transaction feature is disabled by default on your contactless debit card. Please enable the same for contactless payment by logging on to internet banking or mobile banking or calling Bandhan Bank Phone Banking IVR or by visiting your nearest Bandhan Bank branch.

What are the other uses of contactless debit Card?

In addition to contactless payments at NFC-enabled terminals which are being progressively deployed by various merchants, these cards also serve the purpose of regular debit cards i.e. customers can withdraw cash from ATMs, shop at merchant outlets, online/e-commerce transactions etc.

What are the contactless features of Contactless Debit Card?

  • No PIN is required up to ₹5,000 per contactless transaction
  • PIN is mandatory for all transactions above the value of ₹5,000 per transaction
  • Maximum transaction limit is up to ₹5,000  for the contactless mode

Is there a limit for a contactless transaction amount? Can the customer set their own limit?

Payment through the contactless mode is allowed for transactions up to ₹5,000 for a single transaction in India.  For any transaction amount of more than ₹5,000 the customer will have to provide Debit Card PIN to authenticate the transaction. The customer can set their contactless transaction limit up to the debit card’s allowed Purchase transaction (PoS limit) limit by logging on to internet banking or mobile banking or calling Bandhan Bank Phone Banking IVR or by visiting the nearest Bandhan Bank branch.

Can the customer use their contactless Card at other merchants who are not enabled for contactless payment acceptance as well?

Yes, for merchants not enabled for contactless payment acceptance, the customer will be able to use her/his card for normal DIP or swipe transactions.

Could the customer be debited multiple times if she/he has more than one contactless card?

No, contactless readers will only communicate with one card at a time. If the shop reader finds more than one contactless card in the customer's wallet or purse, she/he will be asked to select one card to pay.

Could the customer unknowingly have made a purchase if she/he walks past the reader?

No, the customer’s card has to be waved within 4cm of the card reader for more than half a second and the retailer must have first entered the amount for you to approve. Terminals can only process one payment transaction at a time, therefore reducing transaction errors.

Is there any difference in the process for ATM and Internet payment transactions for this contactless card?

There is no difference in the transaction process for ATM or any card not present transactions including internet payment transactions. For ATM transactions the customer needs to enter the PIN and for Internet payment transactions she/he needs to enter the OTP received on her/his registered mobile number.

Can the customer use her/his contactless debit card if the purchase amount is more than ₹5,000?

Transactions of an amount less than or equal to ₹5,000 will not require PIN; however, contactless transactions for an amount higher than ₹5000 will require PIN authentication.

How does Contactless Card work?

Step 1: Look for the contactless (insert contactless logo) on Point of sale (PoS)
Step 2: The cashier enters the purchase amount into the terminal. This amount will be displayed on the contactless reader
Step 3: Hold contactless card over the reader or at the PoS at close range (less than 4 cm from where the contactless logo appears)
Step 4: Four Green Indicator lights or a beep sound will indicate when the transaction is complete. A message will also be displayed on the screen indicating the transaction is complete. No PIN is required for amounts less than ₹5,000

Please note that in India, payment through contactless mode is allowed for a maximum of ₹5,000 for a single transaction where you are not asked to input your Debit Card PIN.

Is there any additional risk while using a contactless Debit Card?

The customer's contactless Debit Card has to be waved within 4 cm of the card reader for more than half a second and the retailer must have first entered the amount of the transaction. However, as contactless transactions up to ₹5,000 do not require a PIN, customers are advised to take due care while using or carrying contactless Debit Card.
